University Research Commercialized: Undergraduate Start-up Launched Blue Butterfly Body Lotion

On March 20, 2024, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka celebrated a significant achievement with the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and the launch of the innovative “Blue Butterfly Body Lotion” in collaboration with Ceylon Orexsy (Pvt) Limited (COPL), a startup founded by an undergraduate student. The event, held at the university premises, was graced by distinguished guests, including Prof. (Mrs.) GAS. Ginigaddara, Vice Chancellor of the University, and Mr. S.M. Bandara, Managing Director of COPL.
The University’s Business Linkage Cell (UBLC) played a pivotal role in supporting Mr. S.M. Bandara, a final-year student of the Faculty of Management Studies, in elevating his venture into an incorporated company. Centered around the blue butterfly flower, this company received crucial assistance from Dr. Asha Wijegunawardhana, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Technology, who developed a groundbreaking Body Lotion using Blue Pea Butterfly Flower renowned for its skin benefits. Financial support for product development was provided by the UBLC. Representatives from various Faculties and Departments attended the ceremony.
