The first National Research Symposium of Social Sciences and Humanities, Followed by the Dean’s Award Ceremony
To foster a new research culture at the university, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities hosted the first National Research Symposium of Social Sciences and Humanities on November 29, 2022, followed by the Dean’s Award Ceremony.
The presence of Prof. G.A.S. Ginigaddara, Vice-Chancellor of the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, as the chief guest, distinguished the ceremony. Senior Prof. Premakumara De Silva, Chairman of the University Grants Commission’s Social Sciences and Humanities Standard Committee, offered the summit speech. At the symposium, about 70 research papers submitted by scholars from various universities and higher education institutions were presented.
Another noteworthy event on this day was the Dean’s Award Ceremony, arranged for the first time to promote beginning scholars and inspire interest in future academic efforts. Prof. Shirantha Heenkenda, Dean of Sociology and Humanities of Sri Jayewardenepura University was the chief guest of the event followed by Prof. G.A.S. Ginigaddara, Vice-Chancellor of Rajarata University, who attended as the guest of honor. Further, Galvewe Wimalakhanthi Thero, the Dean of Language and Cultural Studies of Sri Lanka Bhikku University, and, E. N. P. S. D. Ekanayake, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya attended this event on behalf of their respective universities.
The Departments of Environmental Management, Economics and Archeology, and Heritage Management obtained the first, second, and third positions as the departments with the highest research involvement. Prof. Geethani Bulankulama, Prof. P.B.N. Abeywardana, Prof. E.M.S. Ekanayake, Prof. Rev. Olaganwatte Chandrasiri Thero, Prof. Sisira Gamage, Dr. D. M. S. L. B. Dissanayake, Dr. Nilmini Dayananda, and Senior Lecturer Deepika Udayakanti, were the recipients of awards for their contributions to research and design. The prestigious golden award once in a lifetime was awarded to Prof. Chandana Rohana Vithanachchi of the Department of Archeology and Heritage Management.
Prof. Manjula Ranagalage, Chairman of the Research and Publication Committee of the Faculty was the coordinator of both events with the leadership of Prof. Thusitha Mandis, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. Also, the award ceremony received tremendous support from Global GIS Company’s sponsorship.
