Unveiling Nature’s Secret: Digital Tree Inventorying and Identification

A momentous occasion occurred in the vicinity of the Administration Building of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka on the beautiful morning of April 04, 2024. The event was well-attended by dignitaries such as the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Mrs.) GAS. Ginigaddara, All faculty deans, directors of centers and units, executive officers, members of the sustainability steering committee and landscaping development committee, and non-academic and helpful staff members, portrayed a major advancement in environmental concerns and conservation of the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka. Under the inspirational direction of the Vice-Chancellor, the Landscaping Development Committee led these innovative programs that promoted sustainable practices and improved botanical knowledge among our university’s community. The Director of Information Technology Centre and their hardworking crew kindly donated the technical know-how required for the event to go smoothly.
To help solve the riddles of our university arboretum, the event revolved around the novel idea of digital tree inventorying and tree identification made possible by QR code technology. With the help of their cellphones, participants set out on an educational expedition to uncover a plethora of botanical knowledge concealed among our university grounds’ rich flora. By simply scanning the QR code attached to every type of tree, participants were drawn into an enthralling web of biodiversity. They also discovered the many applications of different tree parts, ranging from ecological significance to medicinal uses, which enhanced their understanding of the interconnectedness of all things in nature.
